WHY DO WE

NEED AN

HIV CURE?

  • HIV treatment — called antiretroviral therapy (ART) — works very well to keep people healthy and reduce the risk of serious illness. But it doesn’t remove HIV from the body completely. That’s because the virus hides in certain immune cells in a “sleeping” state, where it can’t be seen or attacked by the immune system.

  • If someone stops taking ART, the virus usually wakes up and starts multiplying again, which can lead to health problems and increase the risk of passing HIV to others.

  • ART must be taken every day for life, which can be difficult for many people. It also comes with long-term costs, possible side effects, and doesn’t remove the stigma of living with HIV.

  • To find a cure, scientists need to understand how HIV hides in the body and what keeps it in that sleeping state.
